Textbook and Syllabus

Calculus (Early Transcendentals) , by Edwards and Penny, 6th ed. We will cover chapters 11-14. The syllabus of this course can be found here

Quizzes

Short quizzes will be given every Thursday during the recitation section. A list of homework problems to study for each quiz will be listed below. They are just for practice and are not to be turned in. The two lowest quiz grades will be dropped, and there will be absolutely no make-up quizzes.

Exams

Three "midterm" exams will be given during the semester (dates announced below). Make up exams will not be given. (except if an absence is approved by the Emergency Dean).

Grades

Grade break-down: quizzes (10%), exams (20% each), final exam (30%). All grades will be numerical (e.g., 0-100). For the final course grades, 90% guarantees an A-, 80% guarantees a B-, 65% guarantees a C-, 55% guarantees a D-. For fairness reasons, there are no extra credit assignments.

Computer grade system

Students may view their grades using the following address (details to follow).

E-mails

In general, when you have questions you should ask your TA first. E-mails asking for information which is on this web page will not be answered.

Exam information

  1. Exam #1 : Exam 1 will be on Friday, September 22 during the lecture time in the lecture room (that is, Buell for the class from 12 to 1 and Noyes Lab for the class from 2 to 3). Exam 1 will cover the following material: the whole chapter 11 and sections 12.2, 12.3 and 12.4. You do not need to know the special case of the formlula for curvature for a curve in the plane. From that section you have to know how to compute curvature, as well as the normal and the tangential components of the acceleration. There will not be any problem with projectiles. NO CALCULATORS. NO CELLPHONES.
  2. Exam #2 : during the lecture time on Friday, October 20. Exam 2 will cover: 12.5,12.6,12.7,12.8,12.9,12.10 and 13.1,13.2,13.3,13.4.
  3. Exam #3 : during the lecture time on Friday, November 17. Exam 3 will cover: 13.5 (no theorems of Pappus), 13.6, 13.7, 13.8, 13.9; 14.1, 14.2, 14.3, 14.4.
  4. FINAL exam :(scheduled by the University) Sec. CL1 : Tuesday, Dec. 12, 7-10 PM; Sec. BL1 : Thursday, Dec. 14, 1:30-4:30. The final exam will be held in our lecture room. BRING your ID with you. The final will include all the material listed above for the three exams plus 14.5, 14.6, 14.7. I will NOT include the material related to curvature, normal and tangential components, theorems of Pappus, centroids and moments of inertia. For Lagrange multipliers you have to know how to solve problems when the region has both interior and boundary, or when the region is determined by two constraints. You have to know change of variables for 2 and for 3 variables; line and surface integrals of both types (w.r.t. arc length/surface area and w.r.t. coordinate elements). NOTE: this list is only a PARTIAL list, so that you pay attantion to that material (which you might not do otherwise). The final will certainly cover more. There will be 8 problems on the final. Note that there is a strict university policy for changing the time of your final, absolutely no excuses for having plane tickets and so on. It is much more strict than for the midterm exams. I am not allowed to excuse students. The students need a permission from the Dean and they have to meet with Prof. Muncaster from the math department (and only for extraordinary cases).
  5. COURSE GRADES: As I said before, I didn't curve the final exam individually, I curved the overall course grades. Also, I submitted your course grade to the University system. Your actual grade is at least the letter which appears in the computer grading system, in some cases around the border lines it is higher. I allowed your TA's to have the final touch for determining the grades. I'll be away from e-mail for most of the vacation, so I'll not answer e-mails. Any changes of grades are done in the beginning of the spring semester. Your TA's will have your final exams. If you have any questions, contact your TA's (probably best in the second week of classes in the spring semester) and then if needed, I could change the grade after talking to your TA. Have a nice break!
