To: Department of Mathematics Faculty Subject: Partial leaves without pay, course buyouts, and teaching reductions From: Joseph Rosenblatt, Professor and Chair, Department of Mathematics Dear Colleagues: Enclosed is a statement of the Department policy concerning partial leaves without pay, course buyouts, and teaching reductions. Originally drafted and adopted December 1989, this document has been revised and adjusted for changing circumstances within the Department and University. The Executive Committee approved this policy in October 2001. I have listed below some effects that a reduced appointment can have on various faculty benefits. I have checked the information below with the appropriate offices; however, you should be aware that regulations may change and you should verify that the information remains correct at the time you request leave or a reduced appointment. I have also attached 4 pages of more detailed information provided by the State Universities Retirement System (SURS) on the effect of partial pay on retirement credit. To summarize: a) During sabbatical leaves retirement credit is earned at the usual rate. b) During a reduced appointment retirement credit is earned at the usual rate; however, the amount paid into the system is reduced unless you choose to contribute the full amount. c) During 100% leave without pay you do NOT receive retirement credit unless you elect to contribute to the system. d) During a reduced appointment (anything less than 100%), you do NOT get credit toward sabbatical leave. e) During a reduced appointment the number of earned compensable sick leave days reduced proportionally. |
