- The Bit Rate of Reality.
Sensations of sound and vision can be digitized in the distant
future to such a high quality that a person listening and viewing from
one vantage point could not distinguish between the display and reality.
Calculating facts about the digital representation of reality is useful today
in order to place the current level of technology into context-answering the
question: where does today's technology fit into developments heading
towards ultimate transparency of audio/video experiences?
Bio
Tomlinson Holman is a professor in the School of Cinema-Television and
principal investigator of the Integrated Media Systems Center of the
School of Engineering at the University of Southern California. He is
president of TMH Corporation where he develops entertainment
technology, and founding editor of Surround Professional magazine.
He developed the Lucasfilm THX Division's offerings: the THX Sound
System for motion-picture theaters, Home THX, and the THX Laser Disc Program,
and was technical director for the design phase of Skywalker
Ranch. Holman holds six U.S. and corresponding foreign patents,
licensed by over 50 companies. He holds Fellowships of the Audio
Engineering Society, the British Kinematograph Sound and
Television Society, and the Society of Motion Picture and
Television Engineers. He is a member of the Acoustical Society of
America and IEEE. He won the Samuel L. Warner Medal and the
Eastman Kodak Gold Medal from SMPTE, and the 1996 Career
Acheivement Award from the Cinema Audio Society. He is the author
of Sound for Film and Television, Focal Press, 1997. He is also a
graduate of the College of Communications, BS'68, University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
