- Symplectic geometry via mechanical linkages.
The configuration space of a polygonal linkage in 3-space admits a natural symplectic structure. Furthermore, when the configuration space is a smooth manifold, it is in fact toric - i.e. there is a half-dimensional Hamiltonian torus action on the space.
I will bring some linkages and use them to illustrate some fundamental concepts in symplectic geometry and to give a physical realization of a few symplectic 4-manifolds.
