A reformulation of Witten's use of fixed point formulae on the free loop space.
Witten showed how to obtain some interesting invariants of a compact manifold X by considering a fixed-point formula on the free loop space of X. I shall explain how to obtain the same sort of invariants from a slightly different point of view. Mathematically the formulae are the same, and so not particularly more rigorous than Witten's. However, they do offer some insight into how these constructions relate to others in stable homotopy theory.
