Abstract by Jon Gunderson
Designing Accessible WWW Pages for Persons with Disabilities.
The WWW is providing new barriers for students with disabilities to learn at UIUC. The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that education be provided in the least restrictive environment and that means that information developed for the WWW must also be designed for use by students with disabilities. This seminar will talk about how to create accessible WWW pages and the projects on campus that are addressing accessibility needs of students with disabilities. Designing WWW pages to meet the requirements of persons with disabilities, also improves the usability of the WWW to all users. Just like concrete curb cuts have improved access to sidewalks by the elderly, delivery persons, bicyclists and baby carriages; curb cuts in the information super highway improves access to information on the WWW for many persons who do not have disabilities.
