I will discuss a conjecture of Kitaoka about finite arithmetic subgroups of GL_n and a very surprising connection to finite flat group schemes. The first talk will be a simple introduction to the origins of the conjecture, its relation to the theory of quadratic forms over Z, and Kitaoka's approach. The second talk will explain the relation to group schemes and some progress I was able to make last year.
