Weekly Calendar
Summer Semester, 2001
MONDAY, July 2
- 245 Altgeld Hall, 1:00 p.m.
- Group Theory Seminar
- Lawrence Reeves, Oxford University, UK
- Not all free-by-cyclic groups are automatic
- Abstract:In his problem list [Problems on automatic groups, 1992], Gersten
asked whether for all finitely generated free groups $F$, a
semidirect product $F\rtimes\Z$ is necessarily automatic. They are
known to be asynchronously automatic. We demonstrate a class of
groups which admit no automatic structure, and observe that some of
these groups are free-by-cyclic.
