Symmetry in Quantum Geometry: an Introduction

We give an elementary exposition of non-commutative geometry. Symmetries fit nicely into a picture of geometric invariants. Natural examples arise from (super-symmetric) physics.

Please also join Arthur Jaffe at a special event of for a presentation of "Fermat's Last Tango " at 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2002 in 314 Altgeld Hall

Fermat's Last Tango is a musical comedy about Andrew Wiles recent proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, which the New York Times described as "Rollicking, Whimsical, Catchy & Clever!" Professor Arthur Jaffe of the Clay Mathematics Institute http://www.claymath.org produced a video production of the off-Broadway play, as well as an interesting, eight-minute interview with Sir Andrew Wiles. Jaffe will introduce the play and a panel of local mathematicians will answer post-filming questions. Expertise in mathematics is definitely not needed to enjoy this event.
