Strengthening actuarial education: Applying skills in the 21st century
Actuarial science has traditionally been a challenging and rewarding discipline; yet it has also been somewhat static. However, for many of the industries that have typically employed actuaries, recent developments have radically changed the professional environment. In particular, the tremendous growth in technology, both physical and intellectual, has increased the variety of applied tools available to the practicing actuary. In addition, there has been an increase in the number of non-traditional options that are suitable for an actuary's skills. This presentation gives an overview of the actuarial profession, discusses current trends in employment, and outlines some recent topics in actuarial research. Finally, the effects of the changing external conditions on university education are considered along with the academic opportunities afforded by this current environment.
