In this talk I'll explain some recent work with Shmuel Weinberger. Our main theorem is the classification of the isometry groups of all closed Riemannian manifolds and their universal covers. I will tell the story of how we discovered this result, how we didn't believe it, and how we proved it. I will also describe a number of applications of this result.

Most of this talk should be accessible to first year graduate students.
