The Topology of Symplectomorphism Groups

Lecture 1. The topology of symplectomorphism groups

245 Altgeld Hall
4 p.m., Wednesday, November 10, 2004

Symplectic manifolds have large (but not too large) groups of automorphisms. This talk will describe some of the information we now have about the topology and homotopy properties of these groups. It will be aimed at a general audience. Subsequent talks will elaborate on some questions concerning the structure of the fundamental group of symplectomorphism groups.

Lecture 2. Ono's proof of the Flux Conjecture

245 Altgeld Hall
4 p.m., Thursday, November 11, 2004

This will describe a recent application of Floer theory to proving a rigidity result.

A reception will be held after the Thursday lecture from 5-6 p.m. in Room 321 Altgeld Hall.

Lecture 3. Comparing toric and symplectic automorphism groups.

245 Altgeld Hall
4 p.m., Friday, November 12, 2004

I will describe work in progress by Sue Tolman and myself that looks at the relation between the fundamental group of the natural automorphism group of a smooth toric variety and the fundamental group of the corresponding symplectomorphism group.
