What are exterior differential systems good for?
Exterior differential systems (EDS) is a set of geometric techniques for studying systems of partial differential equations. I will discuss applications of EDS and local differential geometry to the study of the complexity of matrix multiplication and the classification of complex simple Lie algebras. I will also discuss secant varieties and Vogel's conjectured "universal Lie algebra" and their relations to the other topics.
