The search for a natural transversally elliptic Dirac operator
We will discuss the definition of a transversally elliptic differential operator with respect to a compact Lie group action on a smooth manifold. While many examples are known in the case when the Lie group acts in a relatively simple way, no nontrivial examples of such operators have appeared in the literature for the general case. We will define a general "transversal Dirac operator" and will describe the associated unsolved problems in equivariant index theory. (joint work with Igor Prokhorenkov)
