Mathematics Colloquium, Fall 2007Rob LazarsfeldUniversity of Michigan, Ann Arbor Multiplier ideals and their applications The multiplier ideal of a polynomial or holomorphic function is an ideal that measures in a rather subtle manner the singularities of the function in question. In recent years these multiplier ideals have found many applications in local and global algebraic geometry. I will give an introduction to this circle of ideas.
