SPECIAL LECTURE

Multi-scale methods in atomic physics

The purpose of this lecture is to report on recent progress in understanding atomic physics when the electrons are coupled to the quantized radiation field. First, it will be shown that atomic groundstates persist. Then I will sketch a simple argument, based on a multi-scale virial theorem, showing that excited bound states of an atom turn into resonances. I will conclude with a brief survey of other research interests.
