The Analogy between Algebraic Number Theory and the Theory of Curves over Finite Fields

This is a joint work with G. van der Geer. We explain the well known analogy between number fields and function fields of curves over finite fields. We push the analogy a little further by modifying the notion of an "effective divisor" for a number field.
