The submission deadline for applications for Fall Semester that include a request for financial aid is December 1. The deadline for supplemental materials (including letters of recommendation and transcripts) is January 2. Only applications which are complete will be reviewed. Admission Requirements
Standardized Test Scores
In addition to the University requirements for admission to the Graduate College, the Department of Mathematics requires the following from all students.
- GPA (Grade Point Average) requirement. The general Graduate College requirement is a score of 2.75 (on a basis of 4.00) points or greater. The Department of Mathematics requires a GPA score of 3.00 or greater for Master's degree candidates and 3.25 for Ph.D. degree candidates. (Similarly, enrolled Master's degree students are required to maintain a GPA of 3.00 or greater and enrolled Ph.D. degree students are required to maintain a GPA of 3.25 or greater.)
- GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores are required by the Department of Mathematics, both the general test and the subject test in mathematics, for admission from all applicants who live in the United States or Canada. The tests are not required from other applicants for admission; however, the Math Subject Test ("GREM") score should be submitted as part of the application if the applicant wishes to be competitive for financial aid, and GRE scores are required for all fellowship applications.
Foreign students
For students whose native language is not English (see the list below of countries that we recognize as English-speaking), the University admission requirements include proof of proficiency in English, as measured by the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System). For more information on these requirements for admission see http://www.grad.illinois.edu/admissions/instructions/04c.
In addition, International Teaching Assistants must demonstrate proficiency in spoken English, as measured by the Internet Based TOEFL (iBT), the IELTS, the TSE (Test of Spoken English), or the university-administered EPI (English Proficiency Interview) test. For more information on these requirements for appointment as an International TA see http://cte.illinois.edu/testing/oral_eng/main.html. Students who do not satisfy these requirements are not eligible to receive appointments as Teaching Assistants in the classroom.
Students with departmental or campus support who fail to meet the campus English proficiency requirements to be a TA by February of their third year will not be allowed further support as a TA from the Mathematics Department. Students are encouraged to apply to other institutions to continue their graduate studies if they have failed to meet the campus English proficiency requirements by October of their third year.
