A Guide for Graduate Students in Mathematics: General Information

Mailboxes

Graduate student mailboxes are located in the mail room, 250 Altgeld Hall. These boxes provide a convenient means for the department to get in touch with you. Important messages will sometimes be left in your mailbox, so please be sure to check its contents regularly. Note that the mail room is only open during office hours. There is a mailbox for outgoing campus mail right outside the mail room door. Stamped outgoing U.S. mail may be left in the box labeled "Stamped" in the department office, 273 Altgeld Hall. The correct mailing address for the department to be used on all correspondence is: Department of Mathematics, University of Illinois, 1409 W. Green St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Room and Desk Assignments

All teaching assistants have assigned desks, although some may have to share desks. Research assistants and fellowships students also may share desks subject to availability. Students who don't have assigned desks can reserve carrels in the Mathematics Library. Student offices are located in Altgeld Hall, the basement of Coble Hall, and Illini Hall. Graduate students can also obtain lockers in the basement of Altgeld Hall for a $5 deposit. See the business office staff in 221 Altgeld to obtain a locker. Desk and office assignments are determined by the space committee.

Keys

Keys to the outside door of your office building and the graduate student office and desk to which you are assigned are available from the staff in 273 Altgeld Hall.

Photos

Photographs of all graduate students are located outside 259 Altgeld Hall. You are required to have your photograph taken at orientation. If for some reason you are unable to have it taken during orientation, you must make arrangements with Lori Dick to have it taken as soon as possible. These photos are also used in the private department database of students.

Computer Facilities

The department maintains a computer lab of Sun workstations for the use of graduate students and faculty. It is called the Math Unix Systems Laboratory (MUSes Lab) and is located in room 130 Altgeld Hall. At the start of the fall semester, new students will be given an account and password during their orientation. To establish an account at other times of the year, please see one of the consultants in the MUSes lab in 130 Altgeld Hall during the hours posted there. There are also MUSes workstations in many of the graduate student offices. These machines are for the use of the students in that office. For students who need access to PCs, there is a PC lab in 108 Altgeld Hall.

There is a graphics lab in 102 Altgeld Hall operated by Professor George Francis. It has extensive graphics software including all the Geometry Center software, OpenGL on SCI, Wintel and Mac platforms, and Adobe PhotoShop on Mac and Wintel. Also there are video tape, streaming video and mbone capabilities plus scanners. Interested students can be trained to use this equipment and get a key to the lab.

Note that all students also have "free" accounts on the university system which is maintained by CITES. These accounts also allow modem logins. For further information consult the publication Connections - A Guide to Computing at the University of Illinois, visit CITES's website, or inquire at the CITES Resource Center located in 1211 DCL, 1304 West Springfield Avenue, Urbana. To activate these accounts, you must first have a student ID which can be obtained from the ID Center in the Illini Union Bookstore (809 S. Wright St.) by taking your letter of admission there.

Information about MUSes is available on the web at www.math.uiuc.edu/help/. If you have questions or need assistance with a computer problem please send an e-mail to help@math.uiuc.edu, or see the consultants in 130 Altgeld Hall.

Electronic Mail and Internet

Many departmental notices are sent out by electronic mail. Please read and delete your e-mail regularly. If you are not receiving departmental e-mail notices, please notify Lori Dick in 257 Altgeld Hall. Students are encouraged to add their own home pages to our website. Send your full name and webpage url to the department webmaster for inclusion on the department's member webpage.

The department e-mail address is office@math.uiuc.edu
The department web address is http://www.math.uiuc.edu

UI-Integrate Self-Service

Students can access UI-Integrate Self Service using a web browser from personal computers on campus or remotely from any computer with an internet connection at www.oar.uiuc.edu/current/registration/.

Students should register using their Network ID and password assigned when admitted to the University. For questions or concerns about Network ID's contact CITES Help Desk

Assistance using UI-Integrate Self-Service is also available at the Records Service Center, 901 W. Illinois Street, from 8:30 a.m until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Photocopying

Photocopying facilities are available for official use and each job must be charged to a specific project. The department's photocopiers are located in the mail room, 250 Altgeld Hall. To use the copiers you will be required to enter a code and departmental PIN in order to use the copy machines. The first digit of the code will contain the purpose for making copies (see purpose codes below), and the next three digits will be the code assigned to you as an individual. Your assigned codes will be available from staff members in rooms 257, 221 and 273 Altgeld Hall. Personal copies are available to staff members and students in the department for 10 cents each. Photocopying of personal material at personal expense is subject to availability of photocopying machines. Business copying (secretarial, project, administrative, etc.) takes priority over personal copying (class notes, thesis research, etc.) at all times. If you are unfamiliar with how the copier operates, or if the copier malfunctions, please ask for assistance from the mailroom key operator.

The purpose codes are:
  • 1 (classroom instructors)
  • 2 (administration)
  • 3 (research)
  • 4 (personal)
  • 5-9 (other accounts, e.g. grants).
Teaching assistants may copy materials for the courses they are teaching. Duplicating and costs associated with personal course work and thesis work are a student's financial responsibility.

Photocopy machines that accept coins or charge cards are located in the library as well as in many other locations on campus.
