A Guide for Graduate Students in Mathematics

Click for pdf version of the guide

The mathematics graduate guide identifies the academic policies and procedures for graduate students in the Department of Mathematics. These policies and procedures are based on the following Graduate College and University of Illinois publications:

Graduate College Handbook
Student Code
Instructions for Preparation of Theses

The Handbook for Graduate Students and Advisors explains your privileges and responsibilities as a graduate student, describes many of the services provided to you by the University, and summarizes the Graduate College regulations that apply to all graduate students. There are additional Departmental requirements which in some instances are more stringent than those of the Graduate College. Much of the Handbook deals with rules and regulations, but it also suggests ways in which exceptions can be requested for good reasons. All graduate students should keep this handbook's URL (http://www.grad.illinois.edu/gradhandbook bookmarked for easy reference.

Other publications of interest to graduate students can be found on the Course Information Suite webpage which includes the Course Catalog, Class Schedule, Programs of Study, and General Education requirements.

This Guide has been prepared by the Graduate Advising Office of the Department of Mathematics. It is unofficial and should not be read legalistically. Its purpose is to outline general policies that govern the graduate programs of the Department. Specific questions concerning these policies and programs should be addressed to the Director of Graduate Studies.

In the event that any major changes in the departmental requirements described herein occur, continuing students may choose whether they wish to fulfill the requirements in effect when they began graduate study or adopt the changes in the revised document.

If discrepancies exist between this current document and the documents listed above, then the Graduate College or University policies take precedence, except in the case of more stringent Department requirements.

If there is any doubt regarding the interpretation of any regulation or requirement in this Guide, or if there are questions about the graduate program involving matters not covered here, please consult the Director of Graduate Studies, Professor Randy McCarthy, (217) 333-3354, rmccrthy@illinois.edu.
