In this paper we describe a new formalism (of weight structures) for triangulated categories. It allows to construct weight filtrations, weight spectral sequences (for "realizations"), and "weight complexes", generalising the "classical" ones (for cohomology of varieties). The most relevant examples are Voevodsky's motives and the stable homotopy category SH (of spectra). We also calculate K_0(SH_fin) and K_0(End SH_fin).
