K-theory and Noncommutative Geometry

March-July 2004

Institut Henri Poincare (Paris)

Organizers : Max Karoubi (karoubi@math.jussieu.fr) and Ryszard Nest (rnest@math.ku.dk).

First Announcement

It is the main objective of this Semester to bring together the expertise of K-theory and noncommutative Geometry and to gather most of the mathematicians and theoretical physicists working on these fields and related subjects : Algebraic Topology, Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Differential Geometry, Global Analysis and finally Deformation Theory. Intensive courses on pre and postgraduate level over a period of four months will be organized in order to bring young researchers up to the level where they can understand and participate in the research going on.

At the present time, we plan 7 graduate courses :

  • Fabien Morel : rational homotopy theory of algebraic varieties
  • Boris Tsygan : cyclic homology, noncommutative differential calculus and index theorems
  • Lars Hesselholt : Topological cyclic homology and the de Rham-Witt complex
  • Vincent Lafforgue : KK-theory and applications
  • Ryszard Nest : deformation quantization and index theorems
  • Victor Nistor : K-theory and cyclic homology
  • Dima Tamarkin : operads and formality theorems
  • In addition, there will be short advanced courses and various workshops handled by the organizers and the following mathematicians and physicists :

  • Jean Bellissard
  • Michel Dubois-Violette
  • Joachim Cuntz
  • Eric Friedlander
  • Nigel Higson
  • Ib Madsen
  • Henri Moscovici
  • Markus Rost
  • The Spring course of Alain Connes at the College de France will be included in the schedule of the Semester during that period.

The Semester will conclude with a final conference during the last two weeks (12/23 July 2004).

A Web page of the Semester will be created at the beginning of the year 2002.

There will be funds available through French sources and hopefully European sources as well, although no insurance can be given so far in advance. Fellowships, lodging problems, offices in the IHP will be handled by the "Centre Emile Borel". The Web site http://www.ihp.jussieu.fr/ gives all the practical information about the IHP, the Centre Emile Borel and the semesters planned for the next three years.

Please write to one of the organizers at least one year in advance if you are interested to participate to the 2004 Semester, even for a short period.
