Bielefeld -- Public Transportation

Getting around

There are many buses from Jahnplatz (the center and transportation hub of the city) to the University: take any of the lines 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 57 or 157. After 8pm and on weekends these buses are substituted by lines 221 and 222. The buses stop in front of the main entrance of the University.

A subway/tram connects the train station ("Hauptbahnhof") with Jahnplatz. You can recognize the entrances to the subway by signs saying "U-Stadtbahn". All three lines can be used (in the appropriate direction) between Hauptbahnhof and Jahnplatz which are just one stop apart. Alternatively, take a 5-minute walk between Jahnplatz and the train station through the shopping district.

Bus and Tram Tickets

You may buy single tickets from the bus driver. There are also vending machines at all major stops. For using trams, please remember always to buy tickets beforehand, since there is no ticket sale inside the tram. The usual prize for a ticket is 3,00 DM. Note that tickets obtained from a vending maschine have to be validated inside the bus or the tram.

If you buy (at a vending machine) a set of 5 tickets, you only pay 2,30 per ticket. These tickets can be separated and used by different people.

If you want to leave a bus or a tram, you have to give a signal to the driver beforehand, otherwise he will not stop (there are signal buttons inside the bus or tram).

Taxis

There are usually plenty of taxis at the train station (and also elsewhere). The usual fare from the trains station to the university will be approximately 15.00 DM.

You may order taxis by telephone: From inside Bielefeld dial 97 111 (Bieta Taxi).
