What occurs in the Classroom?
Merit Math 220, Calculus
Students in Merit Math 220 attend a large lecture session Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with other Math 220 students. The lecturer assigns homework, may give quizzes, and gives exams. Then students also attend a 2-hour workshop every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (rather then the regular 1-hour discussions held on Tuesday and Thursday). During these workshops, students work in small groups on a worksheet or activity prepared by the Merit TA that relates to what is being taught in the lecture. Students receive two separate grades for the course. The grade for Math 220 is determined from their performance on homework, quizzes, and exams and is given by the lecturer. Students also receive 2 hours of credit for Math 199. The grade for those two hours is based on their attendance and participation in the workshop portion of the course and is given by their Merit TA.
