Graduation with Distinction
The requirements for Graduation with Distinction are given below for
students in Mathematics and the Teaching of Mathematics. Actuarial Science
majors should follow the requirements as stated at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/UndergraduateProgram/curricula/actuarial.html.
Students in the Mathematics and Computer Science major should follow the
requirements of the Computer
Science Department.
Graduation with:
- Distinction requires a 3.25 average in Mathematics courses
and completion of the requirements of the major in Mathematics or Teaching
of Mathematics. All students will be judged on the quality of their
course selection and are encouraged to fulfill some requirements of
the appropriate Program for Distinction below.
- High Distinction requires a 3.5 average in Mathematics courses
and completion of the Program for Distinction in either Mathematics
or Mathematics Education.
- Highest Distinction requires a 3.75 average in Mathematics
courses and completion of the Program for Distinction in either Mathematics
or Mathematics Education.
Program for Distinction in Mathematics
To enter the Program for Distinction in Mathematics a student must have
completed at least three advanced Mathematics courses with an average of
3.25.
To complete the Program for Distinction in Mathematics a student must
- Maintain a B average in Mathematics
- Complete an approved honors seminar (Math 496) or its equivalent
- Complete an approved Thesis or Project under the supervision of a
faculty member. For such a project a student may receive up to two hours
of credit in Math 390. (The project should take the form of work capable
for submission for the Greenwood-Trijitzinsky
Prize.)
- Take Math 447 and three mathematics courses from the list:
- 412, 413, 414, 417, 418, 421, 423, 432,
- 441, 442, 446, 448, 453, 461, 466, 481,
- 482, 484, 489, or any 500 level course
Subsititutions require the approval of the Honors Committee.
Program for Distinction in Mathematics Education
To enter the Program for Distinction in Mathematics Education a student
must have been admitted to the Minor in Teacher Education and must have
completed at least three advanced Mathematics courses with an average of
3.25.
To complete the Program for Distinction in Mathematics Education a student
must
- Maintain a B average in Mathematics
- Complete an approved honors seminar (Math 496) or its equivalent
- Complete an approved Thesis or Project under the supervision of a
