Minor in MathematicsThere is an increasing mathematization of the modern world. Not only the sciences and engineering but commerce, finance, and the social studies make use of a broad array of mathematical tools. This program is intended to recognize the work of many engineering and science students who now have extensive mathematics programs, while encouraging others to enlarge their mathematical horizons. It will provide an entry to mathematics that can deepen the understanding of their own fields for students in commerce and the social sciences while providing them with professional tools not commonly available to their peers. The minor also is an opportunity for students of liberal arts to explore an important and beautiful intellectual subject that has appealed to scholars over the millennia.Students wishing to declare a Mathematics Minor must fill out a "Statement of Intent to Pursue a Campus-Approved Minor" which is available in the College Office or in the Undergraduate Mathematics Office (313 Altgeld Hall). This form requires the signature of the mathematics adviser in 313 Altgeld. Students should have completed the calculus successfully before applying. Students are encouraged to consult with an adviser for guidance in selecting courses appropriate to their field of specialization. REQUIREMENTS(for students matriculating Fall 2007 or later) I.
