The Department of Mathematics has several women on the faculty:

The department also has had many successful female graduate students. In recent years many of our female Ph.D. graduates have received multiple postdoctoral job offers. Other departments have lauded both their research and teaching credentials. The Department has made a commitment to continue to recruit women for the new programs funded through VIGRE. It feels particularly confident that many women will be attracted to the Department because of the opportunities here for collaboration in various research groups and because of the realistic possibility of being involved in interdisciplinary activities.

During the past three academic years the percentage of women graduate students has hovered around 30% (the largest percentage achieved was 32% in AY 2001-02). This percentage is consistent with the national average and also with the percentage of women applicants. As a result, 32% of the Ph.D. recipients over the past three years have been women.

In the first two years of our VIGRE program in graduate mathematics we have sought to incrase the number of top women graduate students. One of two three-year VIGRE Fellowship awards for Fall 2002 went to Zhou Dong (Carnegie Mellon). In addition, two other VIGRE fellowship awards were given to incoming women students. Overall seven out of 15 graduate students who will have VIGRE Fellowship awards for AY 2002-2003 are women.

Women are being recruited at the postdoctoral level as well. There have been two women in the VIGRE Postdoctoral program for the first two years of our VIGRE award.
