UIUC Math Department - UNIX Account Policy
UNIX Account Policy
The
university policy on acceptable use
applies to
all computer use in the department.
- Employees and graduate students accounts.
- Current employees and graduate students in the department are
entitled to accounts on the Math UNIX systems.
- Accounts of employees who retire from the university
will, at their request, remain active indefinitely.
- The accounts of people who leave the university will
remain active for 3 months.
They can request guest status, see below.
- Guest accounts.
- The preferred way to accomodate guests is to provide them with
a short-term account with CITES. This in particular gives
wireless internet access for laptops. Creation of this account
costs nothing, requires no intervention by the system administration staff,
and can be created
directly by anyone with a UIUC NetID.
See
http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/guests/host-shortterm.html for more information.
- The second possibility to accomodate guests is to provide them
with a login on the Windows computers (currently available 24/7 in
110 Altgeld). This requires activation by one of our system
administrators.
If you need this done, please e-mail
help@math.uiuc.edu with your requirements.
- Finally, if a guest is doing active work in research, teaching or
administrative support for the department and needs to be able to
login to the Math UNIX computers the guest can ask a faculty or
staff member to sponsor a guest UNIX account. Guest accounts will
automatically have all local email forwarded to to their home e-mail
address.
Guest accounts must be re-approved every year by the sponsor.
To sponsor a guest account, the sponsor should send an e-mail to
help@math.uiuc.edu that
contains the first and last name of the guest, date of activation,
expected deletion date, and the guest's home e-mail address.
- E-mail forwarding
- Users who have their accounts expire may request e-mail to be
forwarded to an external e-mail address by sending e-mail to
help@math.uiuc.edu.
- Guest accounts need to have a forwarding address specified
at the time of account creation.
