Description:
Combinatorics is the study of existence, enumeration, and optimization of
discrete configurations. It has applications in computer science, operation
research, genetics, and other natural and social sciences. This conference
emphasizes its optimization and extremal aspects, with topics including
extremal set theory, coloring theory for graphs and hypergraphs, Ramsey theory,
cycles in graphs, discrete geometry, and probabilistic methods in
combinatorics.

the University of Illinois
Vice Chancellor for Research.
Program:
Registration will begin at 9:00am on Saturday, Nov 18. Welcoming remarks will begin at 9:45am, and the first talk will begin at 10:00am. There will be six main lectures and 22 additional invited talks. All talks will be held in
Altgeld Hall, Room 314.
Altgeld Hall will be open and available on Tuesday Nov 21 for attendees who stay an extra day to collaborate on open problems.
This is the
schedule of talks, and the
abstracts for talks.
There will be several social activities occurring during the conference. The
first is a welcome party Friday night from 7:30pm-10pm at the home of Sasha
Kostochka. Sasha's house is at 2109 Strand Drive in far southwest Champaign.
We will provide rides to Sasha's house from the Illini Union; meet in the lobby
at 7:15pm. Please send email to
excill@math.uiuc.edu to let us know if you will be attending
and if you need a ride, so that we can provide enough cars. For those who wish
to drive, hera are
directions. (Note: the map on
MapQuest is missing the section of Stonebridge from Mullikin to Strand;
yahoo.maps is correct.)
Travel:
Parking for those staying in the Illini Union or the Hampton Inn is provided by the hotel. For others driving to campus, parking is available in the
C7 parking structure at the corner of John St. and Sixth St. The entrance is on John St., which is one-way street and must be approached from the west. Any open spot may be used on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, university parking rules are again in effect. We have a limited number of parking permits that allow parking in university lots on Monday. These permits may be obtained during the conference.
The airport for Champaign and Urbana is
Willard Airport (airport code CMI). American, Delta and Northwest Airlines all have service to Willard Airport.
The
Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District has regular
AirBus service from the airport to the Illini Union.
(Note: The AirBus will not be running on Sat, Sun, or Mon.)
The
Illini Limo
(217-384-5892) meets most flights at Willard, and transports to all local hotels.
They have a small stand next to the baggage claim; check in with them
after landing. The fare is $13 one way to any location on campus.
Other airports:
O'Hare (ORD),
Midway (MDW) in Chicago,
Indianapolis (IND), and
Bloomington-Normal (BMI). Rental cars are available at all airports. Driving times: CMI - 10 minutes; ORD - 3 hours; MDW - 2.5 hours; IND - 2 hours; BMI - 1 hour.
IND may be cheaper than ORD, and BMI may have better schedules than CMI.
Champaign-Urbana is an easy drive from IND or BMI.
The university maintains a
web page giving a variety of travel information, particularly driving directions.
We encourage you to travel with people traveling from the same or nearby universities, particularly if driving.
Local Information:
There are many local attractions and restaurants in Champaign-Urbana. Hemanshu Kaul has created a
guide to many of them. The university also has a
community page with local resources, and a list of
local restaurants and
vegetarian restaurants.
Wireless Internet access is available in Altgeld Hall. There are also a few computers available in the basement for accessing email and the web. A username and password for accessing the wireless network or the basement computer may be obtained during the conference.
Registration and Support:
There are no registration fees for the conference, but please tell us as soon as possible if you plan to come. Please email
excill@math.uiuc.edu with your name and institution.
Funds are available to defray a portion of the travel expenses of some attending graduate students and recent PhDs. Individuals desiring support should send email to
excill@math.uiuc.edu. Tell us your name, institution, year of degree (expected or completed), roughly estimated cost of travel, and a sentence or two describing why you want to attend the conference. Send this information by September 15 if at all possible.
Those who are receiving travel support must submit a completed
visitor reimbursement form to us during the conference, along with all necessary documentation.
Additionally, please note that this conference is supported in part by the
Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, of which the University of
Illinois is a member. This support is provided through the IMA's
Participating Institution (PI) program.
Participating institutions
may use IMA/PI funds to support travel of their personnel to this conference.
Accomodations:
The conference will be held in the math department in
Altgeld Hall.
For hotel lodgings within walking distance, the
Illini Union (217-333-1241) is next to Altgeld, and the
Hampton Inn (1-800-HAMPTON or 217-337-1100) is about 9 short blocks away. We have reserved a block of rooms at the Illini Union at the normal rate; mention the EXCILL Combinatorics Conference in the Math department when making reservations.
We have also reserved a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn at a discounted price ($84/night+11% tax per room for a single or double); mention the conference code CBC (Combinatorics Conference) to receive the discount. Rooms at the discounted rate can also be reserved over the web
here using the conference code. Rooms must be reserved before Nov 1 to receive the discount. The discount is available Friday night through Monday night.
For those with a car, there are several other
hotels in Urbana-Champaign, with cheaper prices the farther from campus and closer to the interstate highways.
If you are seeking a roommate, please let us know, and we shall try to match you with other participants.
