Download

IPROM is free software, available under the GNU General Public License.

Installation

Start Matlab, copy and paste the following line to your Matlab prompt, and hit Return:

eval(urlread('http://www.math.uiuc.edu/iprom/code/install.m'))

This line will launch IPROM's installation script.1 The installation script will ask you to enter an installation directory for IPROM. If you simply hit Return without entering anything, IPROM will be installed in your current working directory. I recommend that you enter a new directory, such as my_iprom. The rest of the installation does not require any further input.

How to launch IPROM

Unix

Type iprom (all lower case) at the Matlab prompt after the installation is complete. Then the main IPROM library will appear. To familiarize yourself with IPROM, you can work through the first two labs.

Warning: In the future, you will need to cd into your IPROM directory before starting Matlab. (Your IPROM directory contains a crucial initialization script for IPROM that Matlab will execute when it is launched. Without this initialization, IPROM will not work!)

Mac OS X
Matlab under Max OS X should be fairly similar to Matlab under Unix. If you run into trouble, please let me know!
Windows
Create a new shortcut icon for Matlab.2 Right-click on your new shortcut icon and select Properties from the context menu. Enter your IPROM directory in the Start in field. In the future, when you want to work with IPROM, use the new icon to launch Matlab.

Software requirements

I am developing IPROM with Matlab 6.5 Release 13 and Simulink 5. Things may work with older versions as well, but I can't make any promises here.

The Student Version of Matlab, available at the Illini Union Bookstore, includes a limited but suitable version of Simulink.

The free software package Octave, alas, will not work with IPROM because there is currently no free alternative to Simulink.

Footnotes

1If this command fails with an error message (Error downloading URL), then you are probably sitting behind a firewall that does not allow Matlab to download files from the web. In this case, you need to download the files install.m (1 k) and iprom.zip (115 k) into the same directory. Within Matlab, cd into this directory and type install at the prompt. Now the installation will proceed as above.

2If you are working in one of the EWS Windows labs at UIUC, you might as well skip this step because any new shortcut will be lost when you log out. Your installation of IPROM and any other files you create will be deleted as well. Your best bet is to reinstall IPROM every time you log in. This is sort of awkward (don't blame the messenger --- this problem is due to EWS policies), but it shouldn't be a big deal since it only takes a minute to run the installation script.
