University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Information for Participants
PRE-CONFERENCE PARTY
Participants are invited to a party
Thursday evening at 8 pm, at the
home of Heini and Doreen Halberstam at 1715A Lakeside Drive
in Champaign (phone 217-359-0255).
The home is located in Southwest Champaign.
Directions: From Kirby Ave. (one of the main east-west arteries
in South Champaign and
the continuation of Florida Ave. in Urbana) turn left on Mattis
Ave. (a four lane road about 1 1/2 miles west of the railway
underpass near Neil Street), then take the first left onto
Broadmoor, and the first left onto Lakeside Drive. Turn left
at the end. The Halberstams' are the second home on the left,
opposite the park.
Online maps are available at
the
Champaign-Urbana Map Page.
Transportation to Halberstams' home.
Those who do not have
their own transportation should wait in the hotel lobby
at 8 pm on Thursday. We will have cars
stop by the hotel at around 8 pm to pick up any conference
participants needing transportation. Transportation back to
the hotel will also be provided.
REGISTRATION
Registration will be Friday, 9/17, 8 am - 8:30 am, outside
the Seminar Room on the 20th floor of the Quality Hotel - University
Center (formerly University Inn).
There is no registration fee.
TALKS
On Friday, all talks will be given in the Seminar Room on the 20th floor
of the Quality Hotel. On Saturday, talks will be held in Room 245
of Altgeld Hall, the building housing the UIUC Mathematics Department.
To reach Altgeld Hall from the Quality Hotel, walk 4 blocks east on
John Street until you come to the end of this street when it meets
Wright Street. Altgeld Hall is the historic building with a small
bell tower at the other side of Wright Street.
On both days, the morning and afternoon schedules will begin with
one hour talks at 8:30 am and 1:30 pm, respectively. There will
be half hour coffee breaks at 10 am and 3 pm, and a lunch break
from 12 pm to 1:30 pm. Contributed talks will be scheduled in 30
minutes slots. To allow for short breaks between talks, we ask that
speakers limit their talks to 25 minutes or less, unless the talk
is followed by a break.
TRANSPARENCIES
All speakers are urged to prepare transparencies. The Quality
Hotel auditorium, in which Friday's lectures will be given, has no
blackboards. The lecture room in Altgeld Hall, which will be used
on Saturday, does have a large blackboard, but we still encourage
speakers to use transparencies instead of the blackboard. In both
lecture rooms two overhead projectors will be available. A limited
number of transparencies and pens will be available at registration
for those who have not prepared their transparencies in advance.
BANQUET
The conference banquet will be Friday, September 17, at 7 pm,
in the Quality Hotel. The banquet will offer a choice of three entrees,
Chicken Cordon Bleu, Beef Bordelaise, and Fettucini Alfredo
(Vegetarian). The cost of the banquet is $15; tickets need to be
reserved in advance by September 8 and must be paid at registration.
PARTY
A party for conference participants will be held on Saturday, September
18, at 8 pm, at the home of Bruce and Helen Berndt. Directions will
be provided with the registration packet.
MEALS
The campus area houses many restaurants and coffee shops, mostly
of the fast food variety. The registration packet will include a
list of restaurants and a map.
TRAVEL
Those arriving at the airport and staying at the Quality Hotel can use the
complimentary shuttle service provided by the hotel.
Contrary to a previous announcement, there is no courtesy phone
for the Quality Hotel in the airport;
hotel guests arriving at the airport should call
the hotel (1-800-322-8282 or 384-2100) on one of the public phones
to request the hotel shuttle.
(In addition to hotel courtesy vans, there is a door-to-door shuttle
service which has a desk at the airport; the cost is $9 for
transportation between Champaign-Urbana and the airport.)
DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE QUALITY HOTEL
From I-74, take the Lincoln Avenue exit in Urbana, go south
on Lincoln for about 1 1/2 miles to the light on Green Street,
turn right (west) onto Green Street, go about one mile west on
Green Street, crossing Goodwin, Wright, 6th, 5th, and 4th Streets,
turn left (south) on 3rd Street. The Quality Hotel is a high rise
building half a block to your left. If you are staying at the hotel,
you can park your car in the hotel`s parking garage.
From I-72 and I-57, follow the directions to I-74 east, and then
continue as above.
Further directions, and maps of the UIUC campus and the
Champaign-Urbana area, can be found at
http://www.uiuc.edu under
"Campus Maps".
PARKING
Hotel guests can park their cars at the parking garage of the Quality
Hotel. Those not staying at the hotel can use metered spaces
in the vicinity of the hotel on 4th Street. However, these spaces
fill up quickly, and it may be difficult to find a spot after 8:30 am.
On Saturday, the University parking garage at the intersection of
John Street and 6th Street is available free of charge to the public
(except for spaces marked as 24 hour spaces). The garage is located one
block from Altgeld Hall, the site of the Saturday talks.
