Website:  www.math.uiuc.edu/~aahlgren/math112.html

The website will be your starting point for completing on-line homework assignments (see below).

Required Text and Notes: The required text is College Algebra: Graphing, Data, and Analysis by Sullivan and Sullivan.  The required Math 112 Lecture Notes can be purchased at TIS Copy Shop.  These lecture notes are incomplete; we will fill them in during class.  Bring them to every lecture.

Grading:  Cutoffs for letter grades will be at the traditional 90%, 80%, etc with plus and minus grades given at even intervals.  Your grade will consist of the following:

           Homework                   10%
           Quizzes                        15%

Exam 1                         10%
           Exam 2                         10%
           Exam 3                         15%
           Exam 4                         15%
           Final Exam                   25%

Completed lecture notes will be worth 5 raw extra credit points on the final exam.  All quiz and exam grading in this course will be done by graders from the mathematics department (with my supervision of course).  While I will give them very specific directions about partial credit and will often review the grading myself, I understand that mistakes may occur once in a while.  However, if you feel a mistake has been made, you must bring it to my attention within 1 week after the quiz or exam is returned in class.

Homework: Homework will be assigned daily and must be completed on-line.  We will be using a program called PH GradeAssist for these assignments. (You should have received a packet about this program when you purchased the textbook.)  Each assignment may be attempted once and the lowest 5 scores will be dropped.  A list of the assignments can be found in the lecture notes packet, please note the problems are subject to change.

Quizzes:  Quizzes will be given periodically during the last 15 minutes of class. They will be fairly short, consisting of 2-3 questions.  The purpose of the quizzes will be to test your basic understanding of techniques that have been presented in lecture recently. You will NOT be allowed to use calculators on quizzes.  Makeup quizzes will only be given if you notify me before the quiz by phone or e-mail.  You must present official documentation excusing your absence before or at the makeup quiz.  Your lowest quiz score will be dropped at the end of the semester.  So if you miss a quiz and cannot present official documentation to excuse your absence that will be the quiz you drop.

Exams:  There will be four exams given during class.  Exams are intended to be more in-depth than quizzes.  You will NOT be allowed to use calculators on exams.  You must bring a picture ID to all exams.  The class will be split up into two rooms for exams those locations will be announced prior to each exam.  Makeup exams will only be given if you notify me before the exam by phone or e-mail.  You must present official documentation excusing your absence before or at the makeup exam. You may notice that the first two exams come up very quickly in this course.  This is because the material in Chapter R and much of the material in Chapter 1 should be review. Since these two exams cover much less material than the second two exams, they are worth less of your total grade.  The third and fourth exams will not only cover more material but will also cover more difficult material.  With this schedule, you will have had two full exams before the Drop Date and can hopefully make a well-informed decision regarding your future in the course.

Final:  The final will be cumulative.  The final can make a huge difference in your grade, both good and bad, so study hard.  The final exam will be Thursday, December 18 from 8:00 - 11:00 am.  Locations will be announced later in the semester.

Attendance: It is your responsibility to attend class.  I am not taking attendance, so it is up to you to be in lecture.  If you miss a class then you need to contact someone else in the class to get the lecture notes, or you may purchase a copy of the lecture notes at TIS.  Do not email me (or the TAs) for lecture notes.  Also, there may be announcements made in class about the tutoring rooms, homework, room changes for exams, etc.  Once again, if you miss class, it is your responsibility to check with someone else in the class about any important announcements.

Academic Honesty:  Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.  Violations will be documented and reported.

Best wishes for a productive semester!
