Announcements (12/19/06)

All of the grades have now been submitted, except for students who have registered an HCLA (those grades will be entered shortly).

Individual grades (say, homework or exam grades) can also be viewed in the Math Department Score Reports. To access: go to the math department web page, select "Courses", select "Score Reports".

There was a technical error this weekend, during which students were unable to log in. The problem has been reported to the Math Help Desk and will, hopefully, be fixed soon.

12/10/06

As a reminder, the final exam will take place December 12, 8-11am. For most sections, you will take the exam in 314 Altgeld. For three sections, you should report to the following alternate locations:

AD6: (J. Park's section): 116 Education

AD7: (S. Tichenor's section): 370 Armory

AD8: (J. Marikova's 2 pm section): 108 English

Your TAs will be there to proctor the exam. We are using these extra rooms in order to alleviate the crowding in 314 Altgeld.

11/14/06

The exam curves are now posted on this website

10/6/06

The Math department gives you the option to switch to Math 016. The deadline is 2:00 pm OCTOBER 10 (Tuesday) and there will be NO EXTENSIONS. Here is what you need to do:

You must get a form from 313 Altgeld. Explain that you want to swicth from Math 221 to Math 016 and a person in this office will get you the proper form. You must complete it and get a signature from Kathleen Smith, the 016 instructor. Professor Smith can be contacted by the following means:

Office: 121 Altgeld Hall; hours 9:15-9:45, 11:15-11:45, 1:15-3

Phone: 265-5427

Math 016 meets daily at 8 am and 10 am. There are a VERY FEW seats left in the 12 noon section. You MUST have the signed form returned to 313 Altgeld by 2 PM OCTOBER 10.

9/1/06

The problems from Section 2.4 have been moved from HW #2 to HW #3 because we will not be getting to that material until Wednesday's lecture. HW #3 problems will be announced by Monday afternoon.

8/24/06

Several students have asked about their background and whether or not it is appropriate to the course. Math 221 goes over exactly the same material as Math 220, but more succintly as we have 2 lectures per week instead of 3. It is intended for students who have taken some calculus. The Math department has provided a webpage to help you decide whether you should take Math 220, 221 or 231. If you are still in doubt, ask your academic advisor.

Syllabus

The topics we will cover, along with approximately how many class periods we will use to cover them, are:
  1. Chapter 1, Functions (2 lectures)
  2. Chapter 2, Prelude to Calculus: Limits and Continuity (2 lectures)
  3. Chapter 3, The Derivative (6 lectures)
  4. Chapter 4, Applications of the Derivative (4 lectures)
  5. Chapter 5, The Integral (5 lectures)
  6. Chapter 6, Applications of the Integral (4 lectures)

Course Requirements

There will be three exams given during the semester, and one final exam. Homework will be assigned every week and will be due in your discussion session on Thursday (for Merit Workshop, ask your TA how to submit homework). The distribution of the final grade will be 20% HW, 50% Midterm (16.67% each) and 30% Final.
