News and Information

8/28/03:  The due date for the first homework assignment has been pushed back to Thursday September 4.

9/01/03:  Two extra problems added to Assignment 1 (due on Thursday)

9/02/03:  1.  There's no need to hand in the `Practice Problems' assigned in Assignment 1.
2. Evening Midterms: Subject to room availability, and unless there are serious objections,
I will schedule the midterm exams in the evening of October 2 and November 11.
The advantages to you are

I will book a room for 6pm-8pm.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you have any objections or anticipate any problems.

9/10/03:  Evening Midterms  It seems that a number of people have conflicts between 6pm and 8pm.
I will thus shift the exam time. It will now be scheduled for 5pm-6:30pm .  Please note that there is no other `conflict
time' scheduled for the midterms.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you have any objections or anticipate any problems.

9/16/03:  Evening Midterms  Unfortunately, it looks like an evening time for the midterm won't work.
Thus we'll have to go back to Plan A: the midterm will be during the regular class time on October 2.

9/23/03: Homework due date:In order to  make my office hours more compatible with the Homework due dates,
homework will be collected on Thursdays rather than Tuesdays. I encourage you to come and discuss anything in
the lectures or homework that you don't quite understand.

10/07/03: Last week someone (in Section Q2, I think)  left their copy of the text book in class. I have it in my office.

10/12/03: From the author (David Lay): ``Some bookstores may not carry the Study Guide regularly, or they run out
of stock before classes begin. (In fact, that happened to the bookstores on my campus this Fall.) For that reason, we
have put the first chapter of the Study Guide on the web, to give students a chance to obtain the book by the first day
of classes. The other chapters are not available in pdf format.''

10/30/03: The second midterm will be on Thursday November 13. See here for details.
Also, see here for information on the Final exam.

11/10/03: Section 4.6 has been removed from the syllabus for Midterm 2.

11/17/03: Homework 11 is due on Tuesday December 1, i.e. the first class after the Thanksgiving break

11/25/03: Click here for a Review Sheet listing the major topics and results covered this semester. For more
