Grading:

Your grade for the course will be determined by a weighted average of your scores for homework,  quizzes,
two midterms and a final.   The weights of each will be:
Homework      =   10%
Quizzes           =    20%
Midterm1        =   20%
Midterm2        =   20%
Final                =   30%

Homework

Homework will be assigned each class and posted at this website. The homework from the week ending the preceding
Thursday will be collected on Thursday.  A (small) subset will be graded.

Extra Hour Credit

If you have signed up for a 4th hour credit for this course, here's what you need to do: read sections 6.2, 6.4 and 6.7 and do the Extra Assignment. The assignment is due at 12 noon on December 15.

Quizzes and Exams

Short (app

 

Short (approximately 10 minutes) quizzes will be given in class roughly every second week. These will cover only the work of the preceding two weeks. In addition here will be two in-class midterms and a final exam. Dates and syllabi will be announced at least one week in advance.  The (tentative) dates for the midterms are Thursday September 23 and Thursday November 4.

8/27/04: A typo in Assignment 1 has been corrected. Thanks to those who pointed out the error.

8/31/04: The first quiz will be in class on Thursday, September 2. It will cover sections 1.1 and 1.2.

9/6/04: Homework 2 will be due on Tuesday September 14 (i.e. NOT on Thursday)

9/8/04: Homework 3 is due on Thursday September 16

9/9/04: Quiz 2 will be in class on Thursday September 16. It will cover sections 1.3, 1.4 and  2.1.

9/17/04: The first midterm will be in class on Thursday September 30. See here for more details.

9/27/04: To accommodate people who cannot make the morning office hours, this week there will be office hours on Wednesday from 5pm to 6pm, instead of at the usual time (10am-11am).

10/04/04: Homework 6 is due on Tuesday October 12, i.e. NOT on Thursday October 7.  The next quiz will be on Thursday October 14.

10/25/04: The next quiz will be this Thursday, i.e.  Thursday October 28. It will cover Sections 4.1-4.3.  The second midterm will be on Tuesday November 9. (NOT on Thursday November 4).

11/09/04:  Homework 10 is due on Tuesday November 16.

11/15/04:  In class last Thursday I announced that the due date on Homework 10 has been delayed to Thursday November 18.

11/28/04:  The last quiz will be on Tuesday December 7. It will cover sections 5.5, 5.6, 6.1 and 6.3.  Homework 12 is due on Tuesday December 14..
