12/6/09: See here for a review sheet listing the topics we covered this semester. A couple people have asked whether Sections 6.7 and 7.3 are included in the syllabus for the final: Section 6.7 is included but Section 7.3 is not. Since I didn't include any problems from 6.7 in the last homework set, here are a few problems from that section for you to try: (p371) 1, 2, 4, 10.
12/4/09: See here for an explanation of how your final course letter-grade will be assigned.
11/30/09: Welcome back! There will not be a quiz this Thursday. Your next chance to show what you know will be in the Final exam. See here for details.
11/18/09: The syllabus for tomorrow's midterm does not include Section 6.4.
11/10/09: Thursday's quiz will occupy the FIRST 10 minutes of class time. Don't be late!
11/09/09: The third midterm exam will be in class on Thursday November 19. See here for details.
10/28/09: There will NOT be a quiz this Thursday. The next quiz will be on Thursday November 5.
10/14/09: The second midterm exam WILL be in class on Thursday October 22. See here for details.
9/26/09: There will NOT be a quiz in this coming week. The next quiz will be on Thursday October 8.
9/21/09: To help you study for Thursday's midterm, I prepared a summary of the main ideas and results we have covered so far. You can find it here. Here's another tip for the midterm: Some of the questions will be taken from the homework problems.
9/15/09: The first midterm exam will be in class on Thursday September 24. See here for details.
9/2/09: Tomorrow's quiz will occupy the FIRST 10 minutes of class time. Don't be late!
9/1/09: Starting today, tutoring will be available (for all sections of Math 415) Monday through Thursday from 5pm to 9pm in room 347 Altgeld Hall (5pm to 7pm) and room 243 Altgeld Hall (7pm to 9pm).

Your grade for the course will be determined by a weighted average of your scores for weekly quizzes, three midterms and a final. The weights of each will be:
Quizzes = 10%
Midterm1 = 20%
Midterm2 = 20%
Midterm 3 = 20%
Final = 30%
Letter grades for the course will be `curved', with the class average corresponding to the boundary between a C and a B. The class averages to-date, i.e. for the 7 quizzes and 3 midterms, are
Quizzes = 44.8/70 = 64%
Midterm1 = 70/85 = 82%
Midterm2 = 75/93 = 81%
Midterm 3 = 68.6/100 69%%
The weighted average to-date is thus (0.1*64 + 0.2*82 +0.2*81 +0.2*69)/0.7= 75%.
If the class average for the Final is F%, then the weighted average for the course will be (0.7*75+0.3*F)
The following helpful websites are listed in the Preface of the textbook:
ocw.mit.edu , web.mit.edu/18.06 , math.mit/edu/linearalgebraTutoring is available (for all sections of Math 415) Monday through Thursday from 5pm to 9pm in room 347 Altgeld Hall (5pm to 7pm) and room 243 Altgeld Hall (7pm to 9pm)
Homework will be posted at this website. The homework will not be graded but this doesn't mean it's unimportant! The best (maybe the only) way to learn the course material is to work examples. As added incentive to do the homework, all exams (midterms and final) will include questions either taken directly from, or modeled closely on, the homework sets.

There will be weekly quizzes, three midterms and a final exam. Dates and syllabi for the midterms will be announced at least one week in advance. The (tentative) dates for the midterms are Thursday September 24, October 22 , and November 19.
