Instructor

Denka Kutzarova (Illini Hall 227B, phone 265-6756, e-mail: denka@math.uiuc.edu )

Textbook and Syllabus

Calculus (Early Transcendental functions) , 3rd ed. by Smith and Minton . The book must contain chapters 10-14. The syllabus of the course can be found here here

The prerequisite for Math 241 is credit for Math 220 or Math 221 AND credit for Math 230 or 231. THE FACT THAT THE COMPUTER PERMITTED YOU TO REGISTER FOR MATH 241 DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE THE REQUIRED CREDIT! If you do not have the proper credit, you should not be enrolled in Math 241 and you must drop it and enroll in the proper calculus course. If you have any questions about whether you are enrolled in the correct calculus course, please see either Alison Champion or Dianna Armstrong in 313 Altgeld Hall or e-mail advising@math.uiuc.edu

Quizzes

Short quizzes will be given every Thursday during the recitation section. A list of homework problems to study for each quiz will be listed below. They are just for practice and are not to be turned in. The two lowest quiz grades will be dropped, and there will be absolutely no make-up quizzes.

Exams

Three "midterm" exams will be given during the semester (dates announced below), in the regular lecture classroom, at the regular class time. Make up exams will not be given (except if an absence is approved by the Emergency Dean). Exams could be curved (uniformly for all students) but not dropped.

Grades

Grade break-down: quizzes (10%), exams (20% each), final exam (30%). All grades will be numerical (e.g., 0-100). For the final course grades, 90% guarantees an A-, 80% guarantees a B-, 65% guarantees a C-, 50% guarantees a D-. For fairness reasons, there are no extra credit assignments.

Computer grade system

Students may view their grades on this web page . You may also go to the Mathematics Department home page, www.math.uiuc.edu , and follow the links Courses, then Score Reports.

E-mails

In general, when you have questions you should ask your TA first. E-mails asking for information which is on this web page will not be answered.

Honors credit for James Scholars

For those James Scholars who wish to take extra assignments for honors credit, this must be arranged before the first exam. First, after a lecture, bring me the permission form to sign. Second, contact your TA and they will assign for you one difficult homework problem per week. For honors credit, a course grade of B- or better is required.

Exam information

  1. NO CALCULATORS or other electronic devices on exams and quizzes.
  2. Exam #1 Monday, February 18, in the lecture room during the lecture time. Material for Exam 1: All the material which I presented from Chapters 10 and 11 and 12.1, 12.2. The rest which I'm teaching now will be for Exam 2. Of course, the materail that I skipped from Chapter 11 will not be on exams. There will be NO proof on the exam. Apart from the practice problems, the best preparation would be to read all the problems I solved during the lecture.
  3. Exam #2 Wednesday, March 12, during the lecture. Material for Exam 2: sections 12.3,12.4,12.5,12.6,12.7,12.8: 13.1,13.2,13.3,13.4.
  4. Exam #3 Monday, April 21. Material for Exam 3: sections 13.5,13.6,13.7,13.8,14.1,14.2,14.3,14.4,14.5. Every stuent will obtain 10 MORE POINTS added to the original score on Exam 3. Further curving by lowering the cut-lines for the grades will be done after the final exam.
  5. FINAL exam:(scheduled by the University) 1:30-4:30 PM, Friday, May 2 in the lecture room. You have to bring to the final your university ID card. Material for final: Apart from the material listed above for exam 1,2 and 3, sections 14.6,14.7 and 14.8 will be included. For sure there will be problems to apply the formula from divergence theorem and the Stokes' formula. There will be 9 problems on the final.

Note that the University has a strict policy about finals and does not allow to change the time. You can NOT take the final earlier, please make your travel plans according to that. After the course grades are computed with the computer system, I allow the TA's to look at the grades for students from their sections near the border lines, so for some of those the actual reported grade might be different from the grade which you can see in the computer system. If you have any questions about the scores, you can contact your TA in the beginning of the next semester. Besides, any change of grade is done in the beginning of the next semester anyway. I will not reply to e-mails during the semester break. The scores will appear in the computer system late Wednesday. There will be an intermediate time about one hour while I'm experimenting with the curve before the final grades are decided.
