General Information
Math 230 Section Al is a lecture-discussion course. Every Friday - of a week on which there is no exam - there will be a quiz. The quizzes are 15-25 minutes long. The first one is on January 26. No calculators may be used on exams or quizzes. It is possible as well that I will select certain problems for you to work on out of class and turn in. Such problem sets will be announced in class and count as quiz grades.

Section AL1 meets: MWF 8:00-8:50 in 145 Altgeld Hall.

Make-Up Policy
Make-up quizzes or exams will be given only if you are excused for a university related activity (e.g. university sporting event, marching band trip, a required field trip in a course), or your absence is approved by the Emergency Dean (in case of an illness, personal or family emergency). Two quiz grades will not be counted, so if you miss a quiz, that is one you drop. If you are ill for an hour exam, contact me by e-mail BEFORE THE EXAM.

Textbook
Edwards and Penney, Calculus (Early Transcendentals), Edition 6e (Prentice Hall, 2003)

Homework
Homework will be regularly assigned but not collected. Working problems is essential for you to understand and gain fluency with the concepts and techniques presented in the course. The purpose of the quizzes will be to provide regular feedback to me and to you on your understanding of the material. I encourage you to ask me questions in a timely manner regarding any problems you don't fully understand.

Grading Policy
Weekly Quizzes 15%
Hour Exams 51%, (17% each)
Final Exam 34%

Exams
Hour Exam 1 Time: Monday, February 20
Hour Exam 2 Time: Monday, April 10
Hour Exam 3 Time: TBA
Final Exam: Saturday, May 6, 8:00-11:00 AM.

Last, but not least...
You are probably wondering what the grading scale is. Well, here is how it is:

100-90: A

89-80: B

79-70: C

69-60: D

59-0: F

with pluses and minuses appended as appropriate. The above scale is a guaranteed one in the sense that if you get a 90% you will not receive anything worse than an A-, and could possibly be getting something better. I don't believe in curving. The only case when this might be called for is if I write an exam that is too hard. I will try my best not to do that, so that the above scale could be used without modifications. Any questions, concerns, etc., please ask.
