- This is a detailed description of what was done in each
class; there
is a separate listing of the homework
that was assigned. These files will be revised as soon as
possible after each class to keep them up to date.
- Come to class ready to discuss any examples or problems that
you were not sure of.
- References are to the textbook for this class, Elementary Differential Equations (8th
edition) by Boyce and DiPrima.
- During the semester we will cover the following material from
this text (but not always in the same order as it is presented in the
book): chapters 2 (omit 2.7, 2.9), 3 (omit 3.8, 3.9), 4, and 5, as well
as sections 7.1, 7.5, and 9.1 (for 2x2 systems only).
- Classes are described in reverse time order.
Final Exam: 8-11am Fri. 12/19 in 141 Altgeld.
Problem session for the final exam: 5:00 Thurs. 12/18 in 141 Altgeld.
Special office hours before the final exam: Tues. 12/16 at 4:30; Wed.
12/17 at 11:30; and Thurs. 12/18 at 11:30.
Classes 42 and 42 (M 12/8 and W 12/10): in section 9.1, cover pages
484-488 (Cases 1,2,3); omit Case 4 (complex eigenvalues). See
also pages 422-426 in 7.8 (repeated eigenvalues).
Class 41 (F 12/5): Exam #3 on Chapter 5 plus 7.1 and 7.5.
Thursday, 12/4: problem session for Exam #3; 5:30pm in room 145 Altgeld.
Class 40 (W 12/3): finish 7.5.
Class 39 (M 12/1): finish covering 7.1 and begin 7.5.
Class 38 (F 11/21): begin covering 7.1.
Quiz #10 on F 11/21 covers 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, and 5.7.
Class 37 (W 11/19): cover 5.8.
Classes 35 and 36 (F 11/14 and M 11/17): cover 5.6 and 5.7.
No homework grading in the week of M 11/17: the TA is away.

Class 28 (W 10/29): finish discussion of Chapters 3 and 4.
Class 27 (M 10/27): cover 3.7 and 4.4.
Class 26 (F 10/24): cover 3.6 and 4.3.
Quiz #7 on F 10/24 covers 3.4, 3.5, and 4.2.
Class 25 (W 10/22): Exercise 23 in 5.5; change of variables reduces
Euler equations to constant coefficient linear equations.
Class 24 (M 10/20): cover 4.2.
Class 23 (F 10/17): finish 3.4 and also cover 3.5.
Quiz #6 on F 10/17 covers 3.3 and 4.1.
Class 22 (W 10/15): begin 3.4.
Classes 20 and 21 (F 10/10 and M 10/13): finish 3.3 with the last part
of 4.1; Abel's Theorem and uses of the Wronskian for nth order linear
homogeneous differential equations.
Quiz #5 on F 10/10 covers 3.1 and 3.2.
Class 19 (W 10/8): begin 3.3.
Class 18 (M 10/6): finish 3.2.
Class 17 (F 10/3): begin 3.2 and the first two pages of 4.1, up to
Theorem 4.1.1 (existence and uniqueness for linear differential
equations).

Class 15 (M 9/29): discuss results and solutions of Exam #1.
Class 14 (F 9/26): Exam #1 on sections 2.1, 2.2, 2.6, 2.4, 2.3, 2.5,
and 2.8 (including handout).

Hall.

Classes 8 and 9 (F 9/12 and M 9/15): cover 2.5. Quiz #2 (F 9/12)

Class 6 (M 9/8): finish 2.4 including Bernoulli equations (page 77).
Class 5 (F 9/5): begin 2.4. Quiz #1 on 2.1, 2.2, and 2.6.
