Lecture 18, Wednesday, 10/8/08:
Section 13.1: Double integrals
Topics
- Definition of double integrals via Riemann sums (lightly)
- Geometric interpretation as volumes
- Computation of double integrals via iterated integrals
- Reversing order of integration
Read
Section 13.1. The first part (through p. 1037) introduces double
integrals formally via Riemann sums.
The pictures there are helpful in gaining the right intuition about the
definition and meaning of double integrals, but the material is not
appropriate for hw/quiz/exam problems, so you can just skim through this part.
You can also skip Example 1.4, which requires a numerical approximation
method. However, the other examples (Examples
1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7) are all very instructive and important.
Homework
Section 13.1: 7, 9, 15, 19, 27, 29, 37, 41, 43
Solutions.
