Lecture 19, Friday, 10/10/08:
Section 13.2: Applications of double integrals
Topics
Applications of double integrals:
- Volume under surface
- Area of region R
- Average value of f(x,y) over a region R
- Cumulative totals over a region R given an appropriate density
function,
e.g.: mass of a lamina, given a mass density function;
total population in a region, given a population density
- Center of mass, moments My and Mx (first
moments)
- Moments of inertia Iy and Ix (second moments)
Read
Section 13.2. You can skim over the formal derivation of the various
formulas (e.g., p. 1047 and 1052), but make sure to carefully study
the examples.
