Lecture 9, Monday, 9/15/08:
Section 12.1: Functions of several variables
Topics
- Function of two or more variables
- Graph of a function of two variables
- Level curves (for functions of two variables)
- Level surfaces (for functions of three variables)
Read
Section 12.1. This is an introductory section, with lots of pictures,
so the "reading" can be on the light side. However, you should take a
look at the various types of plots in this section, to get a feel of what
these things look like. While I won't put graphing/sketching problems on
tests (hence no homework from this section), you definitely need to know the
underlying concepts, in particular, the precise meaning of a "graph", a
"level curve", and a "level surface".
Notes
Section 12.2 (limits and continuity) is a theoretical section that
will be deferred till the end of the semester.
