Math 242, Section C, Fall 2006

Final Exam Results (Scores are in!)
The exam is, finally, in the books, and the course grades are set. It
took 6 graders and a total of 67 hours of grading, spread over two and
a half very exhausting days, to get to this point.
The median score was 55 points, the average 52.4; the final was
curved with cutoffs of 65/45/30/15 for A/B/C/D.
Solutions can be found under this link.
Final exam scores and course grades can be accessed as usual.
The grade shown at the end of the score display as "average" (including
plusses and minuses) is your course grade.
See the Final Exam Information Sheet and the
Course Information Sheet for detailed
explanations of the score display and the grading policies.
Enjoy your break!

Homework assignments and solutions
Almost all of the assigned problems are odd-numbered problems for
which answers (though not detailed solutions) can be found in the back
of the book. You can use these answers to check your work for
correctness, though the answers won't help if you didn't get a
problem. Below are links to detailed solutions that I have written
up, using the methods, terminology, and notation from the lectures. I
will post solutions within few days of each assignment and ahead of
any quiz or exam that depends on the material covered in the
assignment. Note that the solutions are provided as scanned pdf
files; some of these may be quite large.

Exam 3 Review Sheet .
The exam is still more than two weeks away (on Wednesday after the
break, 11/29), but I have posted the review sheet now for those
who want to get an early start or study during the break.
Don't wait till you're back from the break!
- [11/6/06]
List of projects for James Scholar Honors Credit.
Click on the above link for a complete list of projects. You only need
to do five of the six projects; see the
James Scholars page
for details on what you are expected to do for these projects.
- [9/18/06]
Honors Credit for James Scholars.
Students in the James Scholars program may satisfy the requirements
for honors credit by completing additional work or projects in the
latter part of the semester. For details click on the above link.
- [9/6/06] Quiz policy:
You must take the quiz in the section in which you are registered
unless you get advance approval (via email) from me to take it in a
different section.
I will give such an approval for any good enough
reason: a job interview, or a review session for another class
certainly qualifies, but so does leaving early for Thanksgiving
Break (e.g., if you are leaving Thursday on a 3 pm bus and you are
registered for the 4 pm discussion section, you can take the quiz
in the morning), or leaving early for a basketball game (I have had
students in the Orange Krush who asked for, and were granted,
favors of this sort). If you do take the quiz at another section,
make sure to (1) let the TA of that section know that you registered
in another section, and (2) write on
your quiz sheet the section for which you are registered.
For the full quiz policy, including the policy on missed quizzes
(no make-ups, but a quiz will be excused if you have a legitimate excuse),
see the Course Information Sheet.
- [9/1/06] Labor Day weekend: Because of the Labor Day
holiday, the will be no lecture on Monday (9/4). Classes will resume
Tuesday (9/5), and the Tuesday discussion sections will take place as
usual. Make sure you don't skip the discussions. Have a happy and safe
holiday weekend!
- [8/23/06] Discussion sections: The first discussion
section will be tomorrow, Thursday, August 24.
- [8/23/06] Section openings: The 3-4 pm discussion section
has several openings (as of 11 am this morning). Additional spaces may
open up early next week if there are students that are registered for
this course pass the corresponding proficiency exam (to be held
Saturday).
-
[8/17/06] Final Exam:
The Final Exam will be given
Saturday, December 16, 7 pm - 10 pm, the slot assigned for
this class according to the
Fall 2006 Final Exam schedule.
The above slot happens to be the last possible final exam
slot and will force all of us (students, TAs, prof) to stay on campus
longer than we might wish, but that's just the luck of the draw - I
have no say in this matter.
Keep the Final Exam date in mind when making travel plans for the
Christmas break. University regulations are very strict about taking
the final at the assigned slot; in particular, you cannot take the
final at an earlier date in order to accommodate travel plans.
If that's too much of a hardship, feel free switch to a Math 242
lecture section whose final is scheduled at a earlier date. For
example, the 12-1 pm lecture section of Math 242 (BL1) has its final
on December 11.
- [8/17/06] Full sections. Some of the discussion sections
are probably full at this time. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can
do about this; I cannot increase the registration caps or "squeeze" a
student into a section that is shown as full. In fact, I have no
control at all over the registration process. A Dean might be able to
override the system in certain cases, but if a section is at the limit
of the room capacity, they probably can't do anything either.
If you can't get into
your desired section at this point, all I can suggest is to register
for another section that is open and doesn't conflict with your other
classes, in the hope of being able to switch sections later.
During the first week of class there is a fair amount of
shuffling going on with students dropping in and out of sections, so
there is a good chance that you will eventually get into
your desired section.
