CD7|Gates William BILL| quiz1:10/10 quiz2:8< 9/10 quiz3:--/10 quiz4:*/10 exam1:45<50/55 average 88/100=B+This (entirely fictional) example shows that Mr. William Gates, whose Net-ID is BILL, was enrolled in Section CD7 of this course. He earned a perfect 10 out of 10 on the first quiz, and 8 points on the second quiz. The latter score got bumped up to 9/10 points due to curving. Mr. Gates didn't show up for the third quiz, so no score is listed for quiz3 (this counts as if he had earned 0 points). He also missed the fourth quiz, but this time he presented a valid excuse: he had a major speech to deliver the day of the quiz. Thus, this quiz will not be counted towards the Mr. Gates' quiz average (nor does it count as a drop score, so he still has one score to drop at the end of the semester). On the score report the excused grade is marked by an asterisk (*). On the first exam, Mr. Gates' raw score was 45 points, which translated into a curved score of 50/55; his current grade is 88/100, which translates to an B+.
Computation of average grade. The "average" shown at the end of the display reflects your current grade in this course. At the end of the semester, once all scores are in (quizzes, exams, final), and drop scores have been factored in, this would be the grade reported as your course grade. (There will be no additional curving or adjustments to this average.)
The average is computed by first computing a quiz average and an exam average from the curved quiz and exam scores, and then averaging these two averages using weights 25/70 and 45/70, respectively. The weights reflect the weight to which these two grade components contribute to your final grade: 25 percent for the quizzes and 45 percent for the midterm exams (with the remaining 30 percent coming from the final); see the Course Information Sheet handed out at the beginning of the semester. For example, if your current quiz average is 70 percent and your current exam average is 90 percent, then your overall average would be (25/70)*70 + (45/70)*90 = 83.
Correspondence to letter grades: The average score shown is translated to letter grades with plusses and minuses as follows:
Curving of quiz scores. All quizzes are scored on a 0 - 10 point scale and curved using cut-offs of 8/6/4/2 points for A/B/C/D. For example, 4 points on a quiz is curved up to 70 percent, or 7 points.
Curving of exam scores. Exams are curved in a similar way, but the curve will be decided after each exam, depending on the class performance; see the exam results pages posted after each exam for curving information.
Excused exams/quizzes: If you have been granted an excuse for a missed quiz or exam, this is indicated in the score report by an asterisk (*). An excused grade is not taken into account in the grade computation. By contrast, a dash (--) in the score report indicates a quiz or exam that was missed; this counts like 0 points in the grade computation. (If you see a hash mark (#) in place of the score, that usually means that the scores for your section have not yet been entered into the system. It may also happen in case you registered late, or switched sections, in which case your name may not have been on the roster at the time the quiz scores were entered. In that case, let your TA know, and we will try to sort things out.)
Drop scores: The lowest quiz score will be dropped before computing the final course grade. The drop-score rule will be implemented near the end of the semester; until that time, the quiz average takes into account all quizzes. Note that no exam scores will be dropped.
