Prof. Bruce Berndt, Cranks in Ramanujan's Lost Notebook
Abstract:
The existence of the crank was first hypothesized by Freeman
Dyson. It was discovered some years later on June 6, 1987 at a
residence hall at the University of Illinois by George Andrews and
Frank Garvan. In fact, the generating function for the crank and
several of its propertities can be found in Ramanujan's lost lotebook:
many of these questions remain unresolved. We will give an expository
talk on the meaning of the crank, its connections with partitions, the
aforementioned entries in the lost notebook, and why Ramanujan was
keenly interested in its connections with partitions, which
are (apparently) different from those of Dyson, Andrews, and Garvan.
