In case of illness or other legitimate excuse, a letter from your dean indicating that you are unable to take the exam at the designated date and time must be presented to the instructor. If you have a valid schedule conflict (say, your regular evening class/lab is at the same time as Math. 241 exam), you must see Professor Igor Nikolaev and bring a printout of your schedule with your name printed in your schedule. If you are excused by the dean of your college or, in case of a schedule conflict, by Professor Nikolaev, then you will be given make up exam. To schedule the make up exam you must see Professor Nikolaev.
Cheating: Please note that if you have with you during the exam, including the final exam, or quiz, calculator, notes, text books, your own scratch paper, etc. (not in your back pack), then it will be considered as cheating. Each instance of cheating (not limited to the above description) can result a warning, point deductions from the score for the written test (minimum 20pts, maximum 100pts), failure in the course and can be a cause for dismissal from the university. Please refer to the Academic Integrity in the Student Code for more information. Please note that
"The instructor may impose one or more of the following penalties for an infraction of academic integrity:
(1) a written notice of warning with a copy to the student's file in the office of the college in which the student is enrolled and to the Senate Committee on Student Discipline;
(2) a reduced grade on the assignment;
(3) a failing grade (zero if graded numerically) for the assignment;
(4) a reduced grade for the course;
(5) a failing grade for the course;
(6) a denial of credit for the proficiency exam; or
(7) any other penalty negotiated and agreed to, in writing, by both parties (not subject to appeal)
(d) The instructor may recommend to the department or unit executive officer (hereafter abbreviated DEO) that the student be suspended or dismissed from the University. Such a recommendation would be made in addition to penalties imposed by the instructor." (see Academic Integrity).
There will be make-up exams. You must have a legitimate, documentable excuse, to take a make up exam. You must let me know at least a week in advance about possible conflict (excluding cases when you are sick, then you email as soon as you can). Notice that oversleeping is not a legitimate excuse. If you missed the exam without a legitimate excuse, the score will be recorded as 0.
Quizzes: will be given almost every second Tuesday during your recitation sessions. For exact schedule, see the table below. Typically a quiz will consist of one or two problems and will last 15-20 minutes. Two lowest scores for quizzes will be dropped. There will be no make-up quizzes. If you have a legitimate, documentable excuse, quiz will be skipped so that it will not count towards your grade and will not affect your drop scores (you will need to show your recitation session instructor appropriate documentation). Otherwise quiz will be recorded as 0 points.
| Quiz # | Date | Topics | Solutions |
| Quiz 1 | 09.08 | 12.1-12.4 | Solution of Quiz 1A, Solution of Quiz 1B |
| Quiz 2 | 10.06 | 13.2-13.4 | Solution of Quiz 2A, Solution of Quiz 2B |
| Quiz 3 | 10.13 | 14.1-14.4 | Solution of Quiz 3A, Solution of Quiz 3B |
| Quiz 4 | 11.10 | 14.7, 14.8 | Solution of Quiz 4A, Solution of Quiz 4B |
Re-grading of exams, homeworks or quizzes must be requested within two days after distribution. No complaints are accepted after that.
Class attendance. "Regular class attendance is expected of all students at the University" (Student code). Instructor may check attendance. Please note that according to Student Code, irregular class attendance may result in withdrawal from the course with a grade of Withdrawal or Failure. The corresponding rules are found in http://www.admin.uiuc.edu/policy/code/article_1/a1_1-501.html. Instructor will consider your attendance irregular if you missed more than four unexcused classes.
Students with disabilities who require academic accommodation in this course are encouraged to contact Disability Resources and Educational Services and Professor Nikolaev.
Final Exam: 8:00-11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 15; room: TBA. This time is unchangeable.
There will be no make up final exam unless required by the university policy. For satisfactory reasons (i.e., documented medical emergency or other extraordinary circumstances beyond a student's control), students may be excused by the dean of their college (not by the instructor) and examined later by their instructor. Absence from a final examination for any other cause is reported as a final grade of absent (ABS) in the course and counts as a failure.
You must have your student ID on the final exam; you may not be allowed to take the final exam if you do not have your student ID with you. No calculators are allowed on the final exam. The final exam is closed-book, closed-notes.
Some files (solutions, etc) will be password protected. The class user's name and password are given during the first day of classes. If you are a registered Math. 241 EL1 student, you can also request class user's name and password via email inik@math.uiuc.edu.
