The course will cover the prescribed syllabus:

Abstract measure theory, outer measure, Lebesgue measure on the real line, measurable functions, the Lebesgue integral, differentiation, Lp -spaces, elementary Hilbert space theory and trigonometric series. Other topics will be included as time permits.

Text: H. L. Royden, Real Analysis (3rd edition), Prentice Hall.

Additional text (do not have to buy): W. Rudin, Real and Complex Analysis, McGraw-Hill.

Prerequisite: Math. 447 or equivalent

How you can check your scores:

Each student will be assigned a semester grade based upon her/his semester average. There will be weekley homework assignments, 2 midterms and a final. They will count toward the average grade as follows:

Midterms: There will be 2 midterms:

Midterms Topics Day, time and room
Midterm 1 To be announced Monday, October 5, 10:00am-10:50am, 341 AH
Midterm 2 To be announced Monday, November 16, 10:00am-10:50am, 341 AH

Midterm exams will contain problems and "proofs"; so, you can be asked to solve a problem and/or reproduce some proofs presented on lectures (the list of theorems will be posted a week before the midterm exam); both midterm exams are closed-book, closed-notes.

If you have a valid conflict at the scheduled exam date, let me know at least one week ahead of the date, indicating the nature of your conflict; you will be notified if you are allowed to take a make up exam. In case of illness, you will be allowed to take make up exam if you can provide a note from McKinley or similar. Otherwise the exam will be recorded as 0 points.

Home works: will be collected every Monday at the end of class except when Midterm is scheduled. For exact schedule, go to Lecture topics, homework assignments, etc and see Collected HW assignments at the end of the web page. Several selected problems will be graded. Two lowest scores for home works will be dropped.

Final Exam: 8:00-11:00 AM, Monday, December 14 , room 341 Altgeld Hall. This time is unchangeable.
