Announcements
The average on the first exam was 88%. Solutions are posted here: Solutions
The average on the second exam was 80%. Solutions are posted here: Solutions Note: If you took a makeup exam, your questions were slightly different. (Oops, Problem 2 should say z = -15, not z = 15. The rest is correct.)
The average on the third exam was 73%. Solutions are posted here: Solutions
Since the average was a bit low, I've decided to curve exam 3 up 2 points, raising the average to 75.
The final exam will be on Friday August 1 in the usual classroom from 1pm to 3pm. It will be cumulative covering up to section 5.3..

(Note: You should do 2.1 #30 by hand showing and labeling every row operation. For the others, you may use your calculator.)Solutions
Note: I accidentally swapped the x- and y-axes in the solution for problem 2.4.24.
- Assignment #3 - due Monday June 30 - 2.5: #S2; 2.6: #32, #S32; 2.7: #S4 Solutions

- Assignment #5 - due Wednesday July 16 (11am) - 3.6: #12; 4.1: #14, #26, #44, #68; plus the following question:
Show that the set of 2x2 matrices with all positive coefficients is NOT a vector space.
During class on Monday July 14 we discussed examples and nonexamples of vector spaces. We didn't get to #8,9,11,12 on the worksheet so I'm leaving those for you to do for extra credit. (5 points each 8,9, 10 points each for 11,12). If you believe the example is a vector space, tell me so and show that it satisfies at least one of the 10 conditions. If not, give an example of where one of the 10 conditions doesn't hold. Here is the worksheet from class. Class worksheet on vector spaces Solutions
- Assignment #6 - due Wednesday July 23 (11am) - 4.2: #30; 4.3: #12, #14, #24; 4.4: #28; 4.5: #26 (I already did 4.2 #20 in class, so I've removed that problem from the assignment. Solutions
