UIUC MAP
ALEKS Assessment
Every student is required to complete an ALEKS assessment (entitled UIUC MAP) by the 10th day of enrollment. (Jan 28). This is an all-or-nothing grade. To obtain a passing grade you must do one of the following:
1) Achieve a percentage grade of at least 60% in the first 10 days of enrollment (between Jan 14 and Jan 28)
2) Achieve a percentage grade of at least 60% on any attempt between Sept 14, 2007 and Jan 14, 2008 AND achieve a percentage grade of at least 20% during the first 10 days of enrollment (between Jan 14 and Jan 28)
In other words, if you earned at least a 60% prior to the start of the semester (anytime after Sept 14, 2007), that score will only count if you also complete an assessment during the first 10 days and earn at least 20%.
Remember that the purpose of the UIUC MAP assessment is to determine if you have the necessary background knowledge for this course. Thus, it is very important that you take it seriously. Something to note: in one of the Math 220 lectures last semester, well over half of the students who scored below 70% on the UIUC MAP went on to earn a D or F or dropped the course. Thus, if you score below a 70%, you are probably not ready for this class.
To take the UIUC MAP initially, there are different course codes to use depending on what sort of access you may have already purchased for ALEKS:
If you have NOT purchased a 20 digit access code and one did not come bundled with your Calculus textbook, then you should start with the Single Use Free "Assessment Only" version of the UIUC MAP. Directions for accessing that are found at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Bourbaki/FreeALEKS.pdf
If you have purchased the $3.50 "Assessment Only" 20 digit access code, then you should take the "Assesment-Only" version of the UIUC MAP. Directions for accessing that are found at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Bourbaki/WebALEKSOnly.pdf.
If you have purchased a full $35.00 "Assessment + Learning" 20 digit access code or if it came bundled with your textbook, then you should take the "assessment + Learning" version of the UIUC MAP. Directions for accessing that are found at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Bourbaki/WebALEKSFull.pdf.
***If you do not reach the 60% minimum on your initial take, you should consider a couple of options:
If you think that perhaps you are not ready to take this course, you should think about dropping back to take Math 115 which is designed as a course to prepare students to take Math 220.
If you strongly feel that you are ready to take this course and would like another chance to take the assessment, you have two choices. 1) If you scored closed to a 60% the first time and would like to just take the assessment again, purchase the "Assessment-Only" access code by following the directions found at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Bourbaki/WebALEKSOnly.pdf. 2) If you would like to bring up your score by reviewing the pre-calc material within ALEKS, purchase the "Assessment+Learning" access code by following the directions at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Bourbaki/WebALEKSFull.pdf.
All information and instructions for accessing the UIUC MAP can be found at http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Bourbaki/ALEKSCore.html
You should plan to take the assessment as soon as possible so that you have ample time to decide what to do next if you do not meet the minimum score. If you ever have any questions about your UIUC MAP score, please feel free to come to office hours or set up an appointment to meet with me.
