Text
Calculus:
Early Transcendentals Version (6th Edition) by Edwards &
Penney (Prentice-Hall, 2003)
This course will cover all of
Chapters 11, 12 and 13.
Recitation:
The
recitation classes are an essential part of Math 242 and attendance
is required. Each recitation section has about 35 students and
will be taught by a graduate student teaching assistant (TA).
The TA will give short lectures on material not covered in the
Mon-Wed lectures, answer questions about the textbook, lectures and
homework, give quizzes, collect and return homework The
TAs will also hold office hours for individual consultations with
students. Because of the smaller number of
students, your TA will be able to give you more personalized
attention than what you will find in the large lectures, so please
take full advantage of your recitation section!
Calendar
Click here
for a semester calendar listing the sections to be covered in each
lecture, the due dates for homework and the dates of all exams.
Grading:
Your grade for
the course will be determined by a weighted average of your scores
for homework, hour exams and final exam. The
weights of each will be:
Homework = 14%
Exam
1 = 17%
Exam
2 = 17 %
Exam
3 = 17%
Final
= 35%
The follow scale describes approximately how the course grades will be assigned. The instructor reserves the right to adjust this scale slightly (for the whole class, not for individual students):
90% or above = A+, A or A-
80%-89% = B+, B or B-
70%-79%
= C+, C or C-
60%-69% = D
below 60% = F
You will be able to check your homework and exam grades at Score Reports, which is the Math Department's gradebook program. This will be available beginning approximately two weeks into the semester. Please check score reports regularly to make sure your grades have been correctly reported and tell your TA promptly about any errors. You are responsible for keeping all of your graded homework and exams so that any discrepancies in recorded grades can be settled.
Exams
There will be
three hour-long exams given during class time, in 134 Temple Hoyne
Buell Hall:
Exam #1 Monday, October 3, on Sections 11.1-11.8
Exam #2
Monday, Novermber 7, on Sections 12.1-12.10
Exam #3 Wednesday,
December 7, on Sections 13.1-13.6
The final exam is on Monday, Dec. 12, 7:00-10:00 pm, location to be announced in class and on this webpage. The exam will cover the entire course. Math 242 has a "non-combined" final exam. There will be no conflict exam given except for those few individuals who meet the official university criteria given here in the student code.
Policies
Calculators:
No calculators can be used on exams. You may use
calculators when doing your homework.
Exam aids: You
may not use any books or notes for any exam.
Missed exams:
If you miss an exam, you will receive a 0 for your grade. The
only exception is if you have a valid excuse for missing, such as a
major illness or a serious emergency - if so, you must inform me
before the exam or, if this is physically impossible, then as soon as
possible afterwards. In this case, you will not be given a
make-up exam, but the average of your other hour-long exams will
count as your grade for the missed exam.
Missing and late
homework: Homework must be turned in to your TA at the
beginning of class on the due date. Late homework will not be
accepted. The only exception to this is when you have a valid
excuse (see "Missed exams" above"). In this
case, the grade for the missing homework will be dropped and will not
count toward your average.
